Go ahead, take the whole family out to dinner tonight. Thanks to rising food costs, cooking at home doesn’t save as much money as it once did.
The difference between the cost of dining out and cooking at home dropped to its narrowest in years last month, according to the federal consumer price index. In the past 12 months, the cost of buying a meal to cook at home climbed 6.3 percent, compared with a 2.6 percent increase in the same meal at a restaurant.
“Fast food used to be a treat in this country a few decades ago, and it’s become people’s everyday eating,” Chipotle Mexican Grill co-CEO Steven Ells told investors and analysts a few days ago.
